Ensure your pool is safe, compliant, and stylish—with the latest rules for 2025.

🛡️ Who Needs a Pool Fence?

In Australia, any pool or spa holding more than 30 cm (300 mm) of water must have a compliant safety barrier. This includes in-ground pools, above-ground pools, spas—even inflatable types.

Height & Gap Regulations

Minimum Height

  • Fences must be at least 1.2 m (1200 mm) tall around the pool perimeter.

Gap Restrictions

  • Maximum 100 mm gap at the bottom of the fence

  • Spaces between vertical bars must be no more than 100 mm

Non-Climbable Zone (NCZ)

To deter climbing, fences must maintain a 900 mm non-climbable zone—clear of bars, ledges, furniture, plants, or toys

Gates & Latches

  • Gates must open outwards, have self-closing hinges, and auto-latching mechanisms—positioned at least 1.5 m high

  • Latches are required to be child-resistant and comply with AS 1926.1–2012

Australian Standards & State Rules

  • All fences must align with AS 1926.1–2012/2024 and relevant state building codes .

  • Some states allow boundary fences (≥ 1.8 m) to form part of the pool barrier, with specific NCZ adjustments

  • State and local authorities may require periodic inspections—e.g., WA inspects within 30 days after installation

Registration & Compliance

  • Pool registration is mandatory in most states; you’ll need proof of compliance when selling or renting.

  • Council inspections ensure fence compliance and may issue penalties for breaches—such as gates propped open or broken latches.

Why It Matters

  • Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death among children under five. Strong, compliant pool fencing has contributed to a 50% drop in child drownings in recent decades.

  • Keeping vegetation, toys, and climbable objects away from NCZ protects children from easy pool access.

Quick Compliance Checklist

  • Fence ≥ 1200 mm tall

  • Gaps ≤ 100 mm at base and between bars

  • Clear 900 mm NCZ zone

  • Outward swing, self-closing & self-latching gates

  • Latches at ≥ 1.5 m height

  • AS 1926.1 compliant materials and design

  • Current registration and compliance certificate

What to Do Next

If you’re unsure whether your pool fencing is compliant:

  1. Request a professional inspection—via a fencing expert or pool certifier.

  2. Arrange necessary repairs or upgrades—to meet all safety and legal standards.

  3. Register your pool & complete required paperwork—especially before selling or leasing.
